New York City, NY
NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan in New York City undertook a major flood resiliency project to protect its East Harlem campus from future storm surge and rising water levels after damage from Hurricane Sandy. The project features nearly half a mile of reinforced concrete floodwalls up to 12 feet high, paired with engineered deployable systems to secure entrance openings and access points against extreme flooding.
To bolster this defense, the design incorporated both Flex-Gate® Side Deploy and Flex-Gate® Bottom Deploy barriers from PS Flood Barriers® at key hospital doors and openings, stored at the point of use so they’re ready for rapid deployment when needed. These flexible, quickly activated barriers work with the permanent concrete structures to protect critical care spaces, electrical systems and infrastructure while allowing normal operations until a flood event occurs. The result is a robust, integrated flood protection system that helps ensure that the hospital remains functional even during severe coastal storms.
